Making Connections - 22 October 2010

My first week in St Lucia was a mixed experience. Of course I was getting used to the climate, the culture, and being away from home with no known purpose. Some days were sunny, some it rained, all days and nights were hot and humid. There was intermittent concern about money, ‘what the hell am I doing here?’ angst, and sometimes I’d get a glimpse of the wonder of what I’d created for myself – a blank canvas, freedom on a beautiful island. There were loads of things I wanted to experience on the island but was so often told that as a single, white female, they weren’t safe to do alone. After getting a bit down about my seemingly limited options, I decided to look for situations where I’d benefit from being a lone female traveler

After leaving the first guesthouse – Caribbean Dream - after three nights, I travelled north and intended to tour around for a few days or weeks. After only 2 nights away I accidently arrived back in the south and was effectively stranded in Vieux Fort, so I returned to Caribbean Dream since it was the easy option. On the surface this situation could’ve been labeled as an unsuccessful days travelling, but in fact it was all part of a great chain of events.

Balenbouche Estate was somewhere I was very drawn to go for some unknown reason. The following day Brigitte, owner of Caribbean Dream, was off to visit her friend and happened to invite me along (something she doesn’t usually do with guests). She then explained that her friend was called Uta and owned Balenbouche. I was very excited about the synchronicity as well as having an opportunity to visit the estate. And once there I discovered that Uta and I shared a similar philosophy. It felt like a wonderful breakthrough as I was really needing to connect and communicate with someone that could understand and resonate with my way of thinking, and the nature of this experiment.

The time in her company was immensely inspiring and I felt really moved by the intensity of the resonance that was occurring. In that rush of emotion I knew that where I was, and who I was talking to, was of huge significance and importance. The connection with Uta was very strong and I was supposed to be there, I just wasn’t able to express it to her or really accept it at that point. The subject of Hermetic philosophy came up, and the Kybalion. I explained that I’d started reading it some months before and it hadn’t engaged me. She promptly found a copy in the house and gave it to me. It was very clear then that I needed it, it was the right time to read it and that I would completely absorb myself in it for the next few days until it was finished.

Four days later, and much the wiser, I came up for air, and that was really the first turning point…
