Before introducing the synopsis of True Colours, the author would like to emphasise that the story and all the characters therein are fictional. Both the characters and aspects of the story were influenced by people and events that the author came across and/or heard about during her 20s. In particular the subjects of personal responsibility, self-identity and morality are central to the plot. The novel has been written in the style of a memoir in order to explore in depth the thoughts and emotions of a woman trying to make her way in a world dominated by consumerism, media and the pursuit of affluence. The aim was to expose the innermost thoughts of someone struggling to find their own identity and has been written in a particular way in order to be entertaining, thought-provoking and sometimes shocking. This is by no means an extended biography of the author and should not be viewed as such.
Madeleine is:
- 29 years old, single and unfulfilled
- lonely, bored and disconnected
- fairly new in town, often drunk and bordering on having OCD
Madeleine wants:
- more love, money, friends and sex
- to be happy
Madeleine thinks:
- there must be something wrong with her, because why else is she lacking when everyone around her seems to have it sorted?
- the only way she will ever be happy is if she changes...
What would you do in her situation?
Madeleine decides to reinvent herself, with hilarious and devastating consequences. Does she succeed in finding happiness?
In Part I, Madeleine focuses her attention on love and sex and is presented with two options:
Rufus - an arrogant man on the rebound with some bad habits, who tests her boundaries; and
John - an easy going, witty and sensitive man who 'likes the sound' of Madeleine.
Neither of them sports a great haircut, but she sees potential in both...
